GARRICK UTLEY HAS DIED OF CANCER

Garrick Utley is a major loss. He and I were genuine friends who just didn't see each other often enough. Besides being a professional hero, ( I produced for him a couple times when I was a pup at NBC) he was possibly the most brilliant person I know. Whenever we would get together, we could just give up on our schedule, because he would always inspire amazing conversation. We spent some of that time together as competitors in places like a deserted mosquito infested island waiting for an invasion of Haiti that never happened, and as CNN colleagues. Wherever it was, there would be that sparking conversation, thanks to him. I'm not inclined to look up to anyone, but I did I did in more ways than one, which is a joke because "Stretch", was mighty tall.
